So Ben and Liz, we hear you have a dishwasher.

B&L: It's true! And a garbage disposal in our sink, too.

But tell me, are you using your dishwasher?

B&L: Well....not really...I mean we tried it out......once...

This is perplexing. Tell me why wouldn't you use your dishwasher, now that you finally have one?

B&L: Isn't it obvious? Do you really think that a 22 year old and 23 year old have washed their share of dishes yet in life to deserve someone else doing them (specifically someone else who is a machine)?

I see what you're saying. It's moral guilt. Understandable. But are there any other reasons?

B&L: Well, for Ben it's not really worth it to wait until the dishwasher is full.

And for Liz?

B&L: Liz just doesn't like bending over. It seems like more work to put them in, take them out, dry them and put them away than to just wash them herself. Furthermore, she hasn't decided which wastes more water.

Oh, conservation is a concern. Well maybe someone out there like GE has statistics about how much water is used in each process.

B&L: We'll have to look into it.

This is all very interesting, but may I make a suggestion?

B&L: Shoot.

Maybe you could make some sort of compromise and wash them by hand, but dry them on the top rack of the dishwasher. You could ease into using the dishwasher over the years.

B&L: Now there's a thought.

OOh, a garbage disposal. That's what I'd call luxury!

Believe it or not, only took me two links to find a debate on the merits of handwashing v. dishwashers:

I am quite envious of your garbage disposal! :) Enjoy your American luxuries!

I too am envious of your garbage disposal.

I think Liz is right though, using a dishwasher is actually more work. If you're going to be rinsing them off etc anyway, why not just do so in a little soapy water?

Use the dishwasher! ...especially when you have colds. It is shown that they kill more germs. You will get used to it in no time!
